Six c’s of motivation

I have just read a very interesting article Six C’s of Motivation by Shiang Kwei Wang and Seungyeon Han. The article suggests a range of ways to increase student’s motivation and interest in the classroom environment.

I believe students tend to loose interest and motivation whilst at school and this is why it is very important to change their attitude and to keep them engaged throughout their whole learning period. The article helps teachers to do this through offering a range of strategies that can be incorporated into lessons. Turner and Paris constructed the Six C’s of Motivation to help teachers achieve this.

There are some strategies that I found particularly interesting in the article and believe would increase student’s motivation. I agree with Turner and Paris’s strategy of giving students a choice when setting a task. Giving students the opportunity to choose their team members or deciding how they are going to do a particular task. This gives them the sense of power and therefore will increase their motivation to complete the work.

The article also talks about allowing students to work in collaboration with one another. I believe this is an important aspect to help increase motivation and also improve their learning abilities and as learn and assist one another. The last strategy that I particularly agreed with is what Paris and Turner refer to as consequence. This refers to rewarding and praising the students’ achievement. Whether it is though material or verbal rewards students grasp a sense of achievement and therefore increase their motivation to achieve well in the next task.
